Quadratic equation

Definition

A quadratic equation is one that can be written as ax squared plus bx plus c = 0, with a not equal to zero. The squared term is what makes it quadratic rather than linear.

Standard form

ax2+bx+c=0,a0ax^2 + bx + c = 0, \qquad a \neq 0

The condition a0a \neq 0 matters: if aa were zero the x2x^2 term would vanish and the equation would be linear, not quadratic.

Why there are usually two solutions

A quadratic graphs as a parabola, a U-shaped curve. Solving means finding where it meets the xx-axis, and a U can cross a horizontal line twice, touch it once, or miss it entirely. Those three cases are exactly what the discriminant predicts.
